  1. Thoughts from the Office

Making it personal

I laughed out loud when I read this out-of-office message.

“I am out of office today (Friday, October 11) “enjoying” some PTO.  In reality, I’m attempting to help my sister pick out a wedding dress. I doubt she will actually listen to anything I have to say, but I guess that’s just what sisters do!

I do not plan to be on my phone during this precious life moment and will not be checking my work emails. So if you need immediate assistance, please contact our fun and helpful Marketing Department by emailing —- or by calling 888—-.

I will return back to action on Monday, October 14.”

I couldn’t wait to connect with Taylor to find out how the shopping experience went! The next week when Taylor was “back to action” we e-mailed back and forth on the business at hand with a personal exchange thrown in. “How did go?” I asked. “Dress shopping was a success – we found “the one” for her! And it was the one I picked out which was a complete shock to the system!”

Underwriters and inside agents frequently ask me how to build personal relationships when most communication is through online applications, e-mail, or text. Taylor’s humorous message of personal sharing is a perfect example of achieving a memorable connection. It succeeds in strengthening a business relationship by simply conveying an upbeat and relatable personal experience.

Moral of the story. You can personalize relationships through online conversations. Share a bit of yourself at appropriate times and you will help build a mutual friendly and approachable relationship.

  1. Thoughts from Home

Home safety

I heard John calmly say, “Get the fire extinguisher.” He was turning on the space heater in our outdoor Josmo’s Cafe. I quickly grabbed the closest one in the garage. I looked at the gauge. It read “empty”. Oh boy. Luckily, we didn’t need it at that alarming moment. Dinner was delayed a bit as we checked the two other fire extinguishers we have around the house. I’m embarrassed to say that none were in working condition.

John’s priority the next morning was to buy new ones. Mine was to figure out how to safely dispose of the spent ones. Just one call to our local fire department answered my question. I was told that disposing of old fire extinguishers is a service they provide if I could drop them off. Great news.

Home safety reminder. Check your fire extinguishers. If you don’t have any, buy a couple. It’s also a good time to check to see that your smoke detectors are working.

  1. Josmo’s Café

The beautiful and delicious Lemon Cream Cheese Danish is just in time to make your holiday entertaining easier. John and I explored magnificent Montana in October after I taught an Agency Management CIC class in Billings. Our last stop was in Dillon, MT in the heart of cattle, elk, and antelope country to visit travel friends. The weather was already biting cold, so Vickie made us this Danish as part of a comfort food brunch. I know you will enjoy it!

Check out the story of how Josmo’s Café came into being and dozens of other Josmo’s Cafe recipes on our website.
