  1. Thoughts from Home

Customer service should not be bad karma

I was doing my weekly grocery shopping at my usual store. Since it’s close to our high school, we have a new team of teenage workers every August. I have always found the young people they hire to be pleasant and efficient. Then I met Jason a new checkout cashier. Here was our verbal exchange.

Me: “Hi Jason!” (smile) “How are you today?”

Jason: “HORRIBLE!!!”

Me: (huh) “Ah, Jason, I don’t think you should be telling a customer you’re horrible.”

Jason: “Why? It’s true!”

Me: “Well, you’re in customer service and customers want to be welcomed and greeted with positive energy.”

Jason: “I beg to differ.”

Me: “Interesting.”

At which point I started bagging my groceries to get away quickly.

Moral of the story. I could have engaged with Jason to find out what was troubling him. Call me self-centered, but I really didn’t want to know. Jason’s job, and this goes for all service professionals, is to provide customers a positive and enjoyable buying experience.

  1. Have you read….?

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a business book that I have underlined, highlighted, used post-it notes, and dog eared the pages. That’s how compelling and enlightening I found brothers Chip Heath and Dan Heath’s newest book The Power of Moments – Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact.

Our lives are shaped by our defining moments. A defining moment is a short experience that is both memorable and meaningful. It has four elements. They are elevation – moments that rise above the everyday; insight – moments that rewire our understanding of ourselves or the world; pride – moments that capture us at our best; and connection – meaningful times we share with others such as weddings, vacations, sporting or entertainment events.

The book is filled with real-life examples that will amuse, amaze, and educate. Each principle is summarized with a “whirlwind review.” In addition, the book has teaching clinics that offer a situation and solutions to provide positive defining moments. The Power of Moments may just change your notion on what’s truly meaningful to people.

  1. Josmo’s Cafe

California Salad is our recipe of the month. Our friend Richard makes this rich, sweet, and yes, healthy salad to accompany a simple grilled meat or fish. Your guests will certainly be asking for the recipe. I did and luckily Richard obliged! Enjoy!

We hope you will try our other Josmo’s Cafe recipes posted on the website.
